7 Things to Do in Black Mountain NC

If you’re looking for a breathtaking and serene outdoor escape, look no further than Black Mountain, North Carolina. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and just a few miles from Asheville, there are plenty of things to do in Black Mountain that make it a great day trip destination. From local breweries to its charming downtown shops, Black Mountain is the perfect place to get away from it all.

1. Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center

Housed in a historic fire station, the Swannanoa Valley Museum and History Center features a permanent exhibit about the history of the Swannanoa Valley and a temporary exhibit on a local event, person, or landmark.

2. Shopping in Downtown

Downtown Black Mountain is one of the most charming shopping areas outside of Asheville.

The street is lined with quaint boutiques and specialty shops, along with cafes and eateries.

Those looking for a gift or souvenir will find everything from t-shirts to pottery.

And if you are looking for outdoor gear, there are many shops where you can buy hiking and camping supplies.

3. Local Art & Pottery

Along with shopping, you can also find local arts and crafts located downtown.

There are several galleries featuring works from local artists.

One of the cutest spots is the Old Depot Gallery, which is in the original train depot. There are pieces from over 125 local and regional artisans that are available for purchase.

If you love pottery, you won’t want to miss visiting Sarah Sunshine Pottery. Just a short drive from downtown, her studio is filled with beautiful hand-made pieces.

4. Black Mountain Beer, Cider & More

Beer drinkers will find that Black Mountain has a great variety of places to grab a pint. There is just something about that mountain water that makes a great ale.

Black Mountain Ale Trail

There are three local craft breweries in Black Mountain for you to enjoy and you can even book a Black Mountain Ale Trail brewery tour to take you from place to place!

Pisgah Brewing Company

This organic brewery is part outdoor taproom, part concert venue.

There are rotating food trucks on Thursdays & Sundays; otherwise, you can bring your own when there aren’t food trucks.

It’s the perfect way to enjoy the fresh mountain air.

Lookout Brewing Company

With 13 beers on tap, you will have a great selection of ales to try! The taproom also features a rotating selection of wine, non-alcoholic beers, ciders & hard seltzers!

There is plenty of outdoor seating and food trucks.

Black Mountain Brewing

An interesting fact about Black Mountain is that it is the birthplace of Grammy-award-winning Roberta Flack. That is why you will find a beautiful mural of Flack on the side of Black Mountain Brewing.

You will find about seven beers on taps along with hard cider, ginger beer and wine. Non-drinkers can enjoy one of several flavors of Devil’s foot sodas.

5. Grab a Meal

You will find no shortage of local eateries in town.

There is everything from woodfired pizza to German pork Schnitzel. And desserts… you’ll find a cupcake shop & a Kilwins Chocolate shop downtown.

Fresh Wood Fired Pizza & Pasta is the place to go for Italian. They even have Gluten-free pizza & pasta.

Veranda is a great place for soup & sandwiches and has a nice outdoor seating area.

Berliner Kindl is a one-of-a-kind restaurant that serves authenic German food!

6. Visit Lake Tomahawk

Located just a short drive from downtown Black Mountain, Lake Tomahawk is a great place to spend a few hours.

Go for a walk around the lake, do a little fishing, or rent a paddleboard or kayak and explore the lake.

7. Go on a Hike

One of the most popular things to do in Black Mountain NC is to go hiking.

Since Black Mountain is so close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, you will find plenty of great places to hike.

High Falls NC

You can visit DuPont State Forest to see the amazing waterfalls or hike up Mount Mitchell to take in the most amazing view of Black Mountain.

Just make sure that you pack the right hiking shoes and you might even want a pair of hiking sticks.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in Black Mountain. With its scenic beauty and plethora of things to do, it’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
